Be still my beating heart – a Nutella filled doughnut from Krispy Kreme! Behold – the Nutty Chocolatta!
I was so excited to try the Nutty Chocolatta that I got it out whilst sat in my car, still in the supermarket car park. I just couldn’t waste time driving home first!
I’ve only ever had one doughnut before from Krispy Kreme – their classic glazed ring doughnut, which I loved. So I felt quite sure this was going to be outstanding!
Nutty Chocolatta First Impressions
The first thing I noticed when I took it out, was that the chocolate top was hard. I was expecting more of a sticky, soft chocolate, rather than a hard topping.
Biting into the Nutty Chocolatta, I was then quite disappointed to find the chocolate topping tasted like a synthetic chocolate. It was not what I was expecting.
If you’re going to use a quality ingredients like Nutella as a filling, then surely you need to make sure the topping is equally as good quality?
I could be wrong. Perhaps it’s the most luxury chocolate in the world, but it just wasn’t quality tasting to me.
Where’s the Nutella??
The dough was soft, and easy to bite into. There wasn’t an overwhelming hit of sweetness, which is fine. Typically with a doughnut, you get the sweet hit from the topping, or the filling.
However, in my first bite there was no overwhelming hit of Nutella, either!
Filled with disappointment
A second bite in, and I saw a little glimpse of the nutty brown goodness loved by millions the world over – but just a glimpse. I squeezed my thumb into the underneath to get a bit of ooze.
Three bites is what it took to get a relatively good mouthful of Nutella with my doughnut. Yes, after my initial joy at the discovery of this Nutty Chocolatta doughnut, I found myself to be quite underwhelmed.
Perhaps I had a rogue bad boy. Maybe the person or machine filling my Nutty Chocolatta that day had thought “I doughnut want to do this anymore” and left half way through. Perhaps it was a one off.
Why do they have such rave reviews?
These Nutty Chocolattas have gotten rave reviews everywhere, but based on my experience – I truly can’t understand why.
At £2.50 each I’m not quite sure I want to take the chance to try another Nutty Chocolatta, to possibly be met with the same disappointment.
Does it put me off Krispy Kreme altogether?
No. Like I said, it could have been just a one off, or it could be that all the Nutty Chocolattas are the same.
I’m not going to find out, because in reality there wasn’t really any saving grace about the doughnut as a whole – nothing else that particularly made me enjoy it, regardless of the lack of filling.
A Firm Favourite
Krispy Kreme doesn’t have it’s raging success for no reason. It has a legion of fans Worldwide, all testifying their love for the famous doughnuts. I myself can testify that their classic glazed doughnut is an absolute winner – one I’d have time and time again, so I have no doubt that many doughnuts from their range could be equally as delicious.
So yes, I will definitely try further Krispy Kreme doughnuts. It would be rude not to!
